There are many articles, forums, and threads that analyze 764 in great detail. Instead of simply covering the most heinous details, this is intended to be a resource for parents, caretakers, and families, who may find it useful to picture how an online extortion group operates and what could make their child vulnerable.

The truth is that it's unlikely that 764, a group where many of the key members have been arrested, would harm your child at this point in time. It does however provide a window into this side of the internet where similar threat actors are still active to this day.

Origin

764 was originally created by Bradley Chance Cadenhead, also known as Brad764 or Bottle Of Ibuprofen. He took inspiration from a similar group, CVLT, which he joined in November 2020. The name came from the first three letters of Bradley's zip code, 76401, in Stephenville, Texas. He recruited many members quickly, particularly because he would host Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) on the Discord server.

He was heavily desensitized to gore and pornography, first getting exposure at 8 years old. He was a "non-verbal bullied kid" according to his mother. In 2018, there was a police report filed accusing Bradley of making a terrorist threat against his school. The allegation was that Bradley was speaking about building a bomb to other students. Bradley's mother refused to believe that Bradley made any threats. No action was taken against Bradley.

764 truly emerged from a broader subculture, where users prioritize shock value through images and videos of both gore and CSAM. Eventually, some users, like Bradley, organized extortion networks and recruited members.

Cadenhead was arrested in 2021, after authorities traced a CSAM upload to his mother's apartment. In 2023, he pleaded guilty to 9 counts of child pornography and was sentenced to 80 years in prison.

The 764 logo consists of an upside down pentagram with a leviathan cross laying on top of it.

Ideology

It is not possible to sum all of 764's ideals into one coherent ideology. Many actions are not ideologically motivated. It is nihilistic in nature.

"The term Nihilistic Violent Extremism (NVE) refers to what is motivating most of these subjects to commit criminal acts. They want to sow chaos and facilitate the destruction of society. These extremists often emerge from decentralized online networks and subcultures that glorify violence, mass killers, and self-harm." (FBI Boston)

It is full of extremists of every kind, but notably neo-nazis, satanists, pedophiles, zoophiles, and zoosadists. Much of the edgy, satanic symbolism is simply aesthetic. Sometimes, it isn't.

"Since 764 was first identified by the FBI in 2022, people have linked the group to O9A, with some going as far as to call it an O9A offshoot. But the evidence to support a direct connection has remained murky for some time. It took several years of research to gain a partial understanding of this link." ('The Origins of 764', Bx)

Bx, a notable journalist in this space, goes on to spell out the loose connection between the satanic group 'Order of Nine Angles' and CVLT, the group that inspired Cadenhead and the creation of 764. It's important to remember that these groups are decentralized and that a few co-members doesn't necessarily imply a larger connection. Fundamentally, Bx disagrees with the assertion that 764 is an O9A offshoot.

Common Practices in Extortion

Cutsigning is the practice of cutting a name or symbol into your body. While cutsigning is often done through extortion, sometimes the cutsigning is completely voluntary by the victim. Unfortunately, many of the victims are minors already suffering a mental illness and they are groomed in a community that promotes self harm.

Fansigning is the less extreme version, where it is done with a marker on the body or a physical medium. It might involve a name or symbol on the wall or simply a piece of paper.

Both fansigning and cutsigning will often be done in the background of another activity, like animal abuse or a suicide attempt.

There are documented cases of 764 coercing victims to abuse pets and animals. In the worst cases, the goal is the death of the pet. Otherwise, it is just physical abuse. The victim would be recording the ordeal to others, typically on Discord. Because this article is intended for parents, detail is not necessary here.

The demands made on victims vary widely in severity. It might include physically attacking a younger sibling while recording. Forcing the victim to produce sexual content on camera is very common. It is not unusual in 764's extortion to simply request money alongside other demands.

The Victims and Risk Factors

In nearly every case, the victims have external factors that make them vulnerable. The victim may suffer from a mental illness like depression or bipolar disorder. They are often homosexual, transgender, or queer. Autism or ADHD is also common. It is someone who feels isolated, and spends much of their time online (perhaps too much).

They often live in poor environments. They may be bullied at school or have a hard time fitting in. They live in broken households, where parents are divorced or they only have a single mother or father. Drug addiction is common as well. Many of these factors also apply to the extorter.

It is important for parents to recognize which factors apply to their own kids. These risk factors are relevant to all parts of digital safety and mental health, not just the worst case scenario of an extortion group targeting your child.

Moving Forward

The greatest defense against an organized extortion network is awareness. Awareness increases the likelihood that parents will put the puzzle pieces together when their child is getting groomed by threat actors on the internet. After all, the consequences can be severe. On an optimistic note, more and more focus is being put on these networks. Just in 2025, there was a 490% increase in NVE-related arrests, with most connected to 764.

I encourage readers, especially parents, to share the information in this article with each other. Please read the Resources page on Meneldor to familiarize yourself with the proper channels to report these threats.
